Compare that to the 6.1mm thickness of the current iPad Pro, that's the one with a 10.5mm display. There's a measurement of 6.9mm for the larger iPad Pro with its 12.9mm screen and 7.5mm of the current iPad. There's also the 7.7mm thickness of the iPhone XS. Well, the iPhone XS sure doesn’t feel like it's fat. Remember, of course, that a smartphone has to be strong enough not to bend when it's in your jeans pocket, so there's a limit to how thin it can go. An iPad, however, and rather obviously, doesn’t fit in your pocket. Or, if it does, you may trust me that those are not strides I will be sporting. The thing is, tablets don't need to be the thinnest gadgets around because they're sort of thin enough. But Apple knows that the weight of an iPad really matters as it works as an ebook reader, a video player, a photo album and to provide lots of other functions which require you to hold it for long periods of time. Size, in this context at least, doesn't matter, but weight does and if you really can shave 0.2mm off the thickness of an iPad, there's a weight saving dividend. But alongside that dividend, something else happens, which is CoinCoin's other prediction. Apple will remove the headphone jack from the iPad Pro Once you go below a certain thickness, you just can't get a headphone jack in any more. This happened once with a very thin phone from Sony Ericsson, for instance, which came bundled with headphones that had a special, and thin, proprietary connector because the headphone jack was too big. So, in other words, the iPad Pro, if this rumor is true, will be the first Apple tablet to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack in favor of the Lightning connector which has been the audio input on iPhones ever since the iPhone 7. I resisted this rumor when it first surfaced back in July, arguing that Apple has never sought to make the iPad follow the iPhone unnecessarily. But if Apple has succeeded in getting the tablet's thickness under 6mm, then it may have no choice. There have been other leaks recently suggesting a super-svelte iPad Pro is coming, so the new tablet could be revolutionary in a number of ways, with a new Smart Connector, thin bezels that mean it'll be all-screen, and Face ID But there's still room for a little caution among all these rumors. There's one claim that Apple will replace the Lightning connector with USB-C. This potentially means fast charging and the facility to output 4K HDR to external displays. I find it very hard to believe Apple would dump two connectors at the same time, that is, 3.5mm headphone jack and Lightning. If for no other reason, the creation of a whole new set of EarPods, with a USB-C connector, when it's not available for any other Apple device, seems unlikely to me. Maybe Apple will prove me wrong, and it wouldn't be the first time for that to happen. Ah well, it's not long to wait now – it feels like iPad Pro anticipation is beginning to build.
