India is staring at a massive talent shortage in the artificial intelligence and big data space. A NASSCOM-Zinnov report estimates that the country will have 230,000 openings in the two segments by 2021, but only 90,000 trained candidates. Experts say one reason for the shortfall is that such subjects are still not a part of university curricula. Another NASSCOM study suggests reskilling mid-career professionals to bridge the shortfall, but the process is expensive for companies. Besides, surveys show 40% of candidates quit online courses because they lack motivation and guidance.
